3 Day Juice Cleanse - Day 1

Yesterday was the day I started my 3 day juice cleanse; so far? It's killed me. The 'meals', if you can call them that, aren't so bad, but the juices I've had so far are pretty revolting.

I decided on a juice cleanse, not for diet reasons, but to detox my body after a few days full of food and drinking. I was given this book by Luka, Superjuice: Juicing for Health and Healing by Michael van Straten. His juice recipes are said to have a positive impact on your physical and mental health, even including a grid in the back to tell you what fruits/vegetables help to alleviate what problems - such as stress, colds, name it, he's probably listed it!

So, I thought I'd give it a whirl - after all, I need to try and curb my sweet tooth as I soon won't be able to indulge quite so much while I'm away as I won't be able to bake, sob sob. Genuinely, it is so much harder than I anticipated, and I'm only a day in.

The detox juice diet is said to boost immunity, ward of colds and cleanse your liver, colon and kidneys. And, if you're lucky, you'll lose roughly 4 or 5 pounds. You are told that you WILL feel hungry as there are hardly any calories but it is not worth cheating because you will feel fantastic and refreshed afterwards. No coffee, weak tea only, NO caffeine. Drink masses of water because you will undoubtedly get headaches - but you will feel great and full of protective antioxidant by day 4 so persevere. Yes, I'm not really warming to this either but here we go...

On the menu for day 1:

Breakfast - 1 Orange, 1/2 a Grapefruit, 1 big chunk of melon

and juice 1 of the day Pro Bonus 1 - 2 apples, 2 celery sticks, 1 beetroot (medium with leaves) and 1/2 a small round cabbage. 

Drink: Herb tea with a tsp of honey - I opted for lemon tea with a tsp of honey

Verdict: Fruit a nice breakfast, juice drink DISGUSTING

Lunch - A plateful of red and yellow peppers, radishes, carrot, cucumber, tomato, cauliflower, broccoli, celery, lots of parsley and a dressing of olive oil and lemon juice

Pro Bonus 2 - 4 carrots, 3 chard leaves, 2 apples, 2 broccoli heads, 1 small red pepper, 1 handful watercress

Verdict: Salad was bareable and quite nice with the oil/lemon dressing. The juice was slightly better than the first one of the day but still horrible!

Dinner - A large mixed salad - lettuce, celeraic, tomatoes, cucumber, watercress, onion, garlic, beetroot, fresh mint and any other herbs - use the same dressing as lunch - olive oil and parsley
and a juice of Peak Performer - 12 grapes, 4 pears, 2 apples and 2 slices of pineapple

Verdict: By the time I got home I was feeling really, really ill - not hungry, just in a lot of pain stomach-wise. So this was my tea...

Yes, day one - I cheated. 

I couldn't face another plate of raw vegetables. I also carried over he Peak Performer juice to day 2 and had a few slices of pineapple after my scambled egg. After this, I felt much better. Had the smoothies been fruity all day, I definitely would have made it through but they were simply disgusting.

Going to carry on with it tomorrow but mix the smoothies up a little and adapt the salad to suit me a bit more. Probably defeating the object but the next two days should automatically be easier as I can have more fruity smoothies and proper evening meals!
